Istanbul Airport · IST · Arnavutköy · European side
Istanbul Airport (IATA IST) is the city’s main scheduled passenger airport, in Arnavutköy on the European side, north toward the Black Sea. It is not Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, and it is not the old Atatürk Airport, which no longer handles the city’s scheduled passenger flying. This guide stays with what you can actually use in 2026: one passenger terminal, the M11 line as it runs today from Gayrettepe through the airport to Halkalı, HAVAİST coach fares set on 20 July 2026, the five current IETT expresses, the yellow-taxi tariff, and a pre-booked car with driver. Cab Istanbul’s Istanbul Airport transfer is that car and driver only—not airline tickets, lounges, hotel rooms, HAVAİST seats or a rental car.
Coach, metro and taxi figures below follow the İBB TUHİM decision effective 20 July 2026, plus the operator pages named in each section. Confirm hava.ist, iett.istanbul and the taxi meter on the day you travel. Older “120–250 TL” airport-coach ranges are not current.
Three airports
IST, SAW and Atatürk are not the same place
Flight tickets, hotel pins and older blog posts still mix the three names. Land at the wrong one and you are on the other side of the city, or at an airport that no longer takes scheduled passengers. Read the code on the boarding pass before you book a car.
| Airport | Code | Where | Role now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul Airport | IST | Arnavutköy, European side, north toward the Black Sea | Main scheduled passenger airport. One terminal, operated by İGA. |
| Sabiha Gökçen | SAW | Asian side (Pendik / Kurtköy) | Istanbul’s other airport. Different metro and a different coach brand. See Sabiha Gökçen Airport. |
| Atatürk Airport | Former hub | European side, Yeşilköy area | Not the passenger hub. Scheduled flying moved to IST on 6 April 2019. |
Road distance from IST to Taksim or Kadıköy is traffic-dependent. This guide does not lock 40 km or 55 km, and it does not promise a fixed minute count. Reaching the European centre by road is often well over an hour at peak times. The Asian side, including Kadıköy and SAW, means a bridge or a tunnel if you go by car or taxi, and those tolls are extra.
Airport overview film—pair it with the dates, runway note and fares below, not with a frozen destination count.
The terminal you use for scheduled flights is the single main passenger building. A second terminal is not in passenger service, and the M11 stop labelled Terminal 2 is closed until that building exists.
Which side of the city
European IST, Asian SAW
IST sits in Arnavutköy, well north of the historic peninsula and the Bosphorus bridges. SAW is a separate airport on the Asian side. If your ticket says SAW, do not follow IST metro or HAVAİST instructions. The coach that links the two airports is a HAVAİST line, not a city metro ride, and a road transfer between them is its own trip: IST to SAW transfer, or a booked Sabiha Gökçen airport transfer if you are starting from SAW.
Atatürk is the name people still use out of habit. It is not where Turkish Airlines and the other scheduled carriers now base their Istanbul passenger operation. Treat any “Atatürk Airport hotel shuttle” or “Atatürk metro” wording on an old page as expired unless a live operator still prints that name for a non-passenger site.
Opening and operator
29 October 2018, then the full move on 6 April 2019
The ceremony and the first air-traffic opening were on 29 October 2018. That is not the same day the whole scheduled passenger operation left Atatürk. The full move of scheduled passenger flights happened on 6 April 2019. An April 2018 opening date is wrong, and Atatürk is not still the passenger airport.
The operator is İGA (Istanbul Grand Airport), a build-operate-transfer consortium. Day to day, that is the company behind the terminal, the airport Wi-Fi and the airport’s own published passenger information on istairport.com.
On 18 September 2026 a fourth main runway opened. It is about 2,820 metres and the first east–west strip. The airfield is now described as four main runways plus two reserve strips—six strips in all. A longer-term sketch of nine runways and 200 million passengers a year is a plan, not a result already delivered in 2025. A frozen “350 destinations / 110 countries” count is the same kind of outdated line. The site is often cited at about 76.5 million square metres. Airport City—hospital, fairground, residences—is not described here as already open.
Inside the building
One terminal: arrivals, departures, transport level
Scheduled passengers use one main terminal. Arrivals and departures are stacked in that building; HAVAİST desks and buses sit on the transport level at arrivals −2. You do not change terminals to catch a domestic connection the way some multi-terminal hubs force you to. What does change the plan is whether you stay airside or pass Turkish passport control—covered with visas and bags further down.
For a door-to-door plan into the city rather than a platform-by-platform route, start with Istanbul Airport to the city centre and then pick the district page that matches your hotel.
M11 · TCDD Taşımacılık
The metro already runs to Halkalı
M11 is operated by TCDD Taşımacılık, not by Metro İstanbul. It is not a “planned extension” beyond the airport. Passenger service now runs Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport – Halkalı, about 69 kilometres and about 57 minutes end to end. About 15 stations are in service. The Terminal 2 station stays closed until that terminal exists.
The line opened in stages, which is why older pages stop at the airport:
- 22 January 2023: Kağıthane–Cargo.
- 29 January 2024: Gayrettepe–Kağıthane.
- 19 March 2024: onward toward Arnavutköy Hospital.
- 19 June 2026: Arnavutköy Hospital–Halkalı, with passenger service from 20 June 2026.
Useful changes, not one-seat rides into every neighbourhood: a short walk from Gayrettepe toward the Zincirlikuyu metrobus; Kağıthane toward the M7 metro; Halkalı toward Marmaray. M11 does not take you directly to Sultanahmet or Kadıköy. Hours are roughly 06:00 until around midnight. There is no night metro on this line. Headway is often cited around 15 minutes—treat that as a soft figure and check the day.
The fare is distance-based under the İBB TUHİM decision effective 20 July 2026. It is not the flat 46.20 TL city-metro fare. The first tap takes the maximum band; the exit gate refunds the unused distance. There is no transfer discount with other modes. Older quotes such as 29.90 TL, or a 90 TL card price, are not this tariff. This page does not convert the bands into another currency.
| Stations in the trip | Full fare |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | 37.40 TL |
| 4–6 | 42.34 TL |
| 7–8 | 47.89 TL |
| 9–10 | 53.74 TL |
| 11–12 | 59.90 TL |
| 13–14 | 66.39 TL |
| 15–16 | 73.19 TL |
Pay with an İstanbulkart and keep it for the exit gate so the unused distance can be refunded. A long ride toward Halkalı or Gayrettepe sits in a higher band than a short hop; the table above is the full-fare scale, not a special airport surcharge.
Metro context—hours end around midnight, and the Terminal 2 station is not in passenger service.
HAVAİST · not HAVABÜS
Airport coaches and the 20 July 2026 fares
HAVAİST is the IST airport-coach brand. HAVABÜS is a different product and is not the name to use here. Desks and buses are on the transport level, arrivals −2. The official site is hava.ist. The support number printed there is 0850 888 33 34. Confirm the live timetable on hava.ist the day you travel: running times depend on traffic, and not every line is a 24-hour promise.
Fares below are the TUHİM luxury-transit prices effective 20 July 2026. On board you can pay with İstanbulkart, QR, credit or debit. There is no student fare, no abonman (season pass) discount and no transfer discount. Do not plan on cash. Do not revive a 120–250 TL range. Children aged 0–5 sitting on a lap travel free under the hava.ist rule; a seat of their own is a full fare.
| Line | Where it goes | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| HVL-9 | Taksim | 470 TL |
| HVL-5 | Beşiktaş | 405 TL |
| HVL-11 | Sultanahmet | 420 TL |
| HVL-1 | Aksaray | 470 TL |
| HVL-6 | Kadıköy | 515 TL |
| HVL-3 | Esenler otogar (intercity bus station) | 370 TL |
| HVL-4 | Bakırköy / Merter | 420 TL |
| HVL-2 | Beylikdüzü | 460 TL |
| HVL-8 | Halkalı | 350 TL |
| HVL-10 | Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | 530 TL |
HVL-10 is the coach between IST and SAW, not a substitute for reading the SAW airport page if that is where you actually land. HVL-8 to Halkalı is a coach, separate from the M11 train that also serves Halkalı.
IETT expresses
Five city buses, all on the European side
The official iett.istanbul page lists five airport expresses, and only these: H-1 Mahmutbey, H-2 Mecidiyeköy, H-3 Halkalı Marmaray, H-6 Yunus Emre / Arnavutköy and H-8 Hacıosman. Drop H-4 Atatürk. It is not a current IST express.
The TUHİM list of 20 July 2026 prices these airport buses at 92.40 TL, counted as two full boardings. They stay on the European side. They are not a substitute for HAVAİST HVL-6 to Kadıköy, and they are not the luxury coach to Taksim or Sultanahmet.
| Line | Toward | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| H-1 | Mahmutbey | 92.40 TL |
| H-2 | Mecidiyeköy | 92.40 TL |
| H-3 | Halkalı Marmaray | 92.40 TL |
| H-6 | Yunus Emre / Arnavutköy | 92.40 TL |
| H-8 | Hacıosman | 92.40 TL |
Use IETT when your stop is actually on one of those five lines and you are comfortable with a city-bus ride after a long flight. For a named central stop with a fixed coach fare, HAVAİST is the product built for that job.
How to leave
Transport at a glance
Pick the mode from the stop you need, not from a single “best way” slogan. Rail is strong toward Gayrettepe and Halkalı. Coaches cover named districts. Taxis and booked cars cover the address the buses skip.
| Mode | Who runs it | Fare logic | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| M11 | TCDD Taşımacılık | Distance bands 37.40–73.19 TL | Gayrettepe, the airport and Halkalı. Not a direct ride to Sultanahmet or Kadıköy. |
| HAVAİST | Airport coaches, hava.ist | Fixed line fares from 20 July 2026 | Taksim, Beşiktaş, Sultanahmet, Kadıköy, Esenler otogar and the other listed stops. |
| IETT H-lines | iett.istanbul | 92.40 TL | H-1, H-2, H-3, H-6 and H-8 only. European side. Not H-4. |
| Yellow taxi | Airport ranks, UKOME tariff | 71.94 TL opening, 47.92 TL/km, minimum 230 TL; tolls extra | A metered ride from the rank. No locked city-centre total. |
| Booked car with driver | Cab Istanbul | Quoted for the booked trip | A pre-arranged transfer. Not the taxi queue, and not a guided tour. |
Yellow taxi
Opening fare 71.94 TL, then 47.92 TL per kilometre
Airport taxis use the same UKOME tariff as the rest of the city, as published for 20 July 2026. For a yellow C-segment cab the opening fare is 71.94 TL, the distance rate is 47.92 TL per kilometre, and the minimum trip is 230 TL. That table has no day rate and no night rate. Bridge, tunnel and motorway tolls are extra. This page does not lock a Taksim total or a Sultanahmet total: the meter, the route and the traffic decide the ride.
Ranks are at the airport. Use the official queue rather than a driver who approaches you inside the terminal. A fuller discussion of why the total moves sits in how much a taxi from Istanbul Airport costs. Cab Istanbul is not that queue. A booked transfer is a different product, arranged before you land.
Private transfer
A booked car with driver, not the taxi line
Cab Istanbul sells a booked Istanbul Airport transfer: a car and a driver for the trip you reserve. The driver is not a licensed guide. The company does not sell airline tickets, lounge passes, hotel rooms, HAVAİST tickets or rental cars. There is no invented “book two hours ahead” rule on this page, and no invented meet-and-greet waiting limit. Ask for the conditions that apply to the booking you are actually making.
The same car-with-driver idea, away from a single airport run, is a car with driver in Istanbul. If the day continues beyond the city—toward another Turkish city after you land—that is an intercity car with driver, still transport only.
- Included in the product: the reserved car and driver for the agreed transfer.
- Not included: flight tickets, lounge entry, YOTELAIR or Hampton rooms, HAVAİST seats, IETT tickets, rental cars.
- Not the same as: the yellow-taxi rank, even when both can reach the same hotel.
Transfer film—Cab’s role stops at the car and driver. Tickets, lounges and hotels stay with their own sellers.
Five common arrivals
Taksim, Sultanahmet, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, Esenler
These five places are the ones readers ask for most. Fares in the coach column are the 20 July 2026 HAVAİST prices. Road times are deliberately not locked. At peaks, the European centre is often well over an hour by car, and the Asian side adds a bridge or tunnel toll.
| Place | HAVAİST | Other workable options | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taksim | HVL-9 · 470 TL | M11 to Gayrettepe, then a short walk toward the Zincirlikuyu metrobus; taxi or booked car | Not one seat on M11 into Taksim Square. Detail: Istanbul Airport to Taksim. |
| Sultanahmet | HVL-11 · 420 TL | Taxi or booked car. No direct metro from IST. | Historic peninsula. Detail: IST to Sultanahmet. |
| Beşiktaş | HVL-5 · 405 TL | Taxi or booked car on the European side | Still traffic-dependent. Beşiktaş is not an M11 station. |
| Kadıköy | HVL-6 · 515 TL | Taxi or booked car via a bridge or tunnel; toll extra | Asian side. IETT H-lines do not replace this coach. M11 does not run there. |
| Esenler otogar | HVL-3 · 370 TL | Taxi or booked car to the intercity bus station | The otogar is the city’s main intercity bus terminal. Halkalı Marmaray is a different rail node. |
Aksaray (HVL-1, 470 TL), Bakırköy / Merter (HVL-4, 420 TL), Beylikdüzü (HVL-2, 460 TL) and Halkalı (HVL-8, 350 TL) are on the same coach tariff if your hotel sits on those lines instead. None of them changes the rule that road time follows traffic.
Parking
Multi-storey parking, no fare copied here
Parking is one of the most searched topics around IST, and multi-storey parking does exist. There is no verified 2026 tariff copied into this article, so this page will not invent an hourly or daily price. Check the airport site before you drive in, and budget extra time at the barriers if you are dropping someone off at a departure peak.
A private transfer avoids the car park entirely: the driver handles the kerb, and you are not circling for a space with luggage. If you are keeping a car for days beyond Istanbul, that is a different plan from a short terminal stay.
Where to sleep
YOTELAIR in the terminal, Hampton a short drive out
Only two hotels belong in this guide. YOTELAIR—often still called YOTEL—is the terminal hotel. Airside rooms are for passengers who stay inside the international transit area and do not pass Turkish immigration. Landside rooms require you to pass immigration, which means you need the right to enter Türkiye. This page does not lock a cabin count and does not quote an hourly rate.
Outside the fence, the only nearby hotel named here is Hampton by Hilton Istanbul Arnavutköy, a short drive from the terminal. Older lists of star ratings, review scores and unverified addresses are dropped rather than reprinted. Cab Istanbul does not sell either hotel.
| Hotel | Where | Who it suits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| YOTELAIR | Inside the passenger terminal | A short stay between flights, or a landside night if you have entered Türkiye | Airside rooms stay in international transit. Landside rooms mean passing immigration. No cabin count or hourly rate here. |
| Hampton by Hilton Istanbul Arnavutköy | Outside the airport fence | An overnight before or after a flight, a short drive away | The only off-airport hotel named in this guide. Not a Cab product. No star rating or review score. |
Lounges and Wi-Fi
Lounges exist; this page has no entry price
İGA lounges, Turkish Airlines lounges and alliance lounges are in the terminal. Access rules change with ticket type, status and the pass you bought, so this guide does not print a lounge price and does not copy an old matrix of outgoing, arriving and transit packages. İGA Pass is a paid assistance product; treat any old price grid for it as expired and read the current offer from İGA.
Free Wi-Fi on İGA WiFi is unlimited, according to istairport.com. You start a session with an SMS to a phone, or with a code from a terminal kiosk using your passport or ID. It is not a one-hour allowance. If a splash page looks different on the day, follow the kiosk instructions rather than an old blog timer.
Paid left-luggage exists in passenger guides. No storage price is copied here. Assistance for reduced mobility is an airline and airport service: request it ahead with the carrier. This page does not invent room-by-room details for that service.
Food and shopping
Duty-free, cafés and restaurants after security
On international departures, duty-free and food are extensive once you are through security. That is as specific as this guide gets. It does not lock a restaurant count, and it does not describe hologram displays or a “Magic Mirror” as if those were verified fixtures.
Cafés are spread through the terminal for a coffee before boarding or while you wait on an arrival. They are ordinary terminal food outlets, not a reason to miss a tight connection. If you are only transiting airside, you use what is on the airside side of passport control; landside cafés are for people who have entered or not yet departed through immigration.
Sit-down restaurants follow the same rule: the range is wide after security on international departures, and the mix changes. Eat where your gate and your connection time allow. None of these outlets is sold, reserved or recommended as a Cab product.
Car rental
Desks on arrivals, landside
Car-rental desks are on arrivals, on the landside of the terminal. This guide does not name individual brands, because a live directory was not re-checked desk by desk. The desks exist. Bring a driving licence, a payment card and your passport, and read the excess and the cross-border rules before you sign. Cab Istanbul does not rent cars.
A rental car is the wrong tool if you only need a single ride to a hotel and then a ride back days later. In that case a booked transfer each way, or a taxi from the rank, is simpler than parking and fuel. If you do drive yourself toward the Asian side, budget the bridge or tunnel toll on top of the rental day rate.
Visa and baggage
Sort the visa before you fly; bags follow the ticket
If your nationality needs an entry visa for Türkiye, arrange it before travel. The official e-Visa site is evisa.gov.tr, and it covers tourism and commerce only. Turkish Airlines states that there are no e-Visa kiosks at IST. Do not rely on a general “two counters after landing” story. Visa on arrival exists only for specific nationalities—check mfa.gov.tr for your passport, not a forum summary.
Airside international transit, where you do not pass Turkish passport control, normally needs no entry visa. Some nationalities can still need an airport transit visa even for that airside path. Read the rule for your passport before you accept a tight connection.
Through-checked bags on one ticket stay with the airline. Do not tell every transit passenger they must claim luggage. Separate tickets and self-transfer are different: you often have to collect the bags, enter Türkiye, and hold the visa or the exemption that entry requires. Build the connection time for immigration and a second check-in, not for a sterile walk between gates.
- One ticket, bags tagged to the final city: stay airside if the airline through-checks you. No automatic luggage claim.
- Two tickets you joined yourself: plan to enter Türkiye, with the right visa or exemption, and to re-check the bags.
- Landside YOTELAIR, or any city hotel: you are entering Türkiye, not remaining in international transit.
- Airside YOTELAIR: only if you are eligible to remain inside the international transit area on that itinerary.
FAQ
Istanbul Airport questions
Is Istanbul Airport the same as Atatürk or Sabiha Gökçen?
No. IST is in Arnavutköy on the European side and is the main scheduled passenger airport. SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) is on the Asian side. Atatürk no longer handles scheduled passenger flights; those moved to IST on 6 April 2019.
When did IST open?
The ceremony and first air-traffic opening were on 29 October 2018. The full scheduled passenger move from Atatürk was on 6 April 2019. It did not “open in April 2018.” İGA operates the airport. A fourth main runway opened on 18 September 2026; the airfield is described as four main runways plus two reserve strips.
Does the metro stop at the airport, or does it already reach Halkalı?
It already reaches Halkalı. M11, run by TCDD Taşımacılık, is Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport – Halkalı, about 69 km and about 57 minutes. Passenger service on the Halkalı section started on 20 June 2026. It is not a planned extension. There is no night metro, the Terminal 2 station is closed, and the fare is distance-based from 37.40 TL to 73.19 TL, not the flat city-metro fare.
How much is the HAVAİST coach?
From the 20 July 2026 tariff: Taksim 470 TL, Beşiktaş 405 TL, Sultanahmet 420 TL, Aksaray 470 TL, Kadıköy 515 TL, Esenler otogar 370 TL, Bakırköy / Merter 420 TL, Beylikdüzü 460 TL, Halkalı 350 TL, SAW 530 TL. Pay with İstanbulkart, QR, credit or debit—not cash. The old 120–250 TL range is not current. Children 0–5 on a lap are free; a seat is a full fare.
What does an airport taxi cost, and are tolls included?
The 20 July 2026 yellow C-segment tariff is 71.94 TL to start, 47.92 TL per kilometre, and a 230 TL minimum. There is no day/night split in that table. Tolls are extra. There is no locked Taksim or Sultanahmet total. Cab Istanbul is not the taxi rank.
Do I need a visa to transit, and must I collect my bag?
Arrange an entry visa, if you need one, before travel at evisa.gov.tr (tourism and commerce). There is no general visa counter to rely on after landing, and Turkish Airlines says there are no e-Visa kiosks at IST. Airside transit that never enters Türkiye usually needs no entry visa, though some passports still need an airport transit visa. Bags through-checked on one ticket stay with the airline. Separate tickets often mean claiming bags and entering Türkiye.
Is the Wi-Fi one hour, and can Cab book a lounge or the hotel?
İGA WiFi is unlimited: SMS to a phone, or a code from a kiosk with your passport or ID. It is not capped at one hour. Lounges exist, but this page states no price. YOTELAIR is the terminal hotel (airside or landside); Hampton by Hilton Istanbul Arnavutköy is the short-drive option outside the fence. Cab sells neither, and it does not sell lounge access—only a booked car with driver.
Before you go
A short checklist that matches the 2026 airport
- Read the airport code. IST is Arnavutköy. SAW is the Asian-side airport. Atatürk is not the passenger hub.
- If you need an entry visa, use evisa.gov.tr before the flight, or confirm a narrow visa-on-arrival rule on mfa.gov.tr. Do not expect a general visa desk after landing.
- On one ticket, assume through-checked bags stay with the airline. On separate tickets, assume you will enter Türkiye.
- M11 runs Gayrettepe – airport – Halkalı until around midnight. It does not run all night, and it does not go to Sultanahmet or Kadıköy.
- HAVAİST fares are the July 2026 line prices above. IETT is 92.40 TL on H-1, H-2, H-3, H-6 and H-8 only.
- A yellow taxi starts at 71.94 TL and bills 47.92 TL per kilometre, minimum 230 TL, tolls extra. A Cab transfer is a booked car, not that queue.
Parking tariffs, lounge prices and left-luggage prices are intentionally absent. They were not verified as a 2026 table worth copying, and a wrong number is worse than a pointer to istairport.com, hava.ist and the hotel’s own page.
Next step
Match the code on the ticket, then choose the ride
Land at IST and you are on the European side, in one terminal, with M11 already running through to Halkalı, HAVAİST coaches at the July 2026 fares, and taxis on the published meter. Land at SAW and you need the other airport’s page and, if you want a booked car, a Sabiha Gökçen transfer or the IST–SAW transfer note. For the city, use Taksim, Sultanahmet or the wider city-centre guide, and keep the taxi arithmetic in the taxi fare article.
When the address is fixed and you want the car arranged before arrival, book Istanbul Airport transfer. Add a car with driver for days in the city, or intercity car with driver if the journey continues beyond Istanbul. The driver is not a guide, and the booking is not a lounge, a hotel, a coach ticket or a rental car.
